300 years from now, global warming reaches the breaking
point, Earth becomes a burning dead land which took out 90% of life on it,
those that survive struggle to stay alive. Though life are deteriorating, the
technology continue to advance exponentially, with the aid of new powerful life
form (artificial combination of human DNA with intelligent machines), after 700
years of enormous effort, Earth-recon, a plan to save both our homeland &
mankind has finally succeeded. 1000 years from now, new heavens and a new Earth
rise.. One that nature, humans and technologies are at harmonise.. Eternal
life, star ships travel, energy harvesting from space, time travel &
teleportation, civilise & unite people, that’s Earth, in the 30th century.
That is what I think Earth would be like in the next millennium,
however such perfection does not exist.. and here’s what really happened.. After Earth..
In the near future, an environmental cataclysm forces the
human race to abandon Earth and venture beyond the Solar System in search of a
new home. The exodus ends when humanity settles a new pristine world they call
Nova Prime. On a journey accompanies his father Cypher Raige (Will Smith) on a
mission to Ethos, Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) become the only two survivors after
their spaceship were badly damage by a gravitational storm & crash landed on
Earth, a stranded & unfamiliar class 1 quarantined planet which now rules
by evolved and vicious wildlife strictly to kill humans.. Could they survive?..
Science fiction is always a favourite subject of movies and
the idea of human forcing to abandon Earth, leaving only wild life & nature
is most likely to happen judging by the way this species brutally ravening the
planet’s resources.. Unfortunately in the case of After Earth, the nice idea isn’t
properly convey through the screen as the story line is simple & there is a
major lack of tension. Also part of the plot doesn’t really explain itself
nicely, or should I use the word ‘logically’.. An extremely fatal mission turnout
to be a successful quest due to pure luck & present of friendly giant eagle
on a planet full of atrocious wildlife evolved to kill human, that doesn’t sounds
convincing to me.. Besides, on a planet which temperature fluctuate from 0-25 °C,
I wonder how do the tropical rain forests flora flourish..
Ok maybe I’m a bit harsh on the movie, after all Will Smith
is one of my favourite star. Well there are still something to recommend it in
After Earth. The visual effect is nice, details are good, distinct ecosystem on
both planets, adventure sequences are well-paced occasionally and acting of Jaden
(Simth Jr.) is pretty good actually, not outstanding but not bad at all for a
14 year old. This would have been a better movie if not for its weak storyline and
dragging plot.
