May 31st, most people would bid farewell then calls an end to the month of May, but what most people don't realize is that there’s actually far more to it for the day as every year on May 31st mark the World No-Tobacco Day (WNTD). A day created by World Health Organization (WHO) in 1987 with the intention to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and its subsequence negative health effects (in case you were wondering, this notorious product currently lead to nearly 6 million deaths each year worldwide, including 600,000 of which are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke).
This year, Media Prima Berhad (‘Media Prima’ or ’The Group’), Malaysia’s leading intergrated media company has launched #TakNakSeludup Campaign in conjunction with the World No-Tobacco Day 2015 themed ‘Stop Illicit Trade of Tobacco Products’, with the intention to send out strong message and a call-for-action to our nation to work together to end the trade of illicit tobacco products, especially cigarettes.

Being identified as the third highest among Asian countries in terms of illicit cigarette consumption, the impact of illicit tobacco trade in Malaysia has been devastating as it is the major contributing factor for youth uptake of smoking. It is estimated that approximately one out of every three packs of cigarettes sold in Malaysia are smuggled, which cost a RM 2 billion loses in taxes annually, not to missed the fact that the counterfeit cigarettes has been proven to contain higher dosage of lethal substances in excess of legitimate cigarettes!

The #TakNakSeludup Campaign by Media
Prima Berhad will include a series of Public Service Announcements, feature
articles and special reports on Media Prima’s integrated media platforms to
create awareness on the illicit tobacco trade, thus encouraging Malaysia to
live a healthy smoke-free lifestyle. In addition, by actively banishing the relatively
cheaper but more harmful illicit cigarettes, the campaign hopes to effectively restrict
the underage minors access to tobacco products. Public are encourage to pledge
against the illicit tobacco trade if not to stop smoking for the good of self
and community health.
